With the aim of joining efforts to promote sustainable, equitable and people-centered urban development, ITESO and the Jalisco State Urban Development Attorney's Office (Prodeur) signed a collaboration agreement.
Emma Morales García de Alba, coordinator of the Doctorate in Habitat and Sustainability at ITESO, highlighted the importance of consolidating this agreement into specific actions that contribute to training, professionalization and innovation in favor of more sustainable and inclusive urban environments.
Noé Saúl Ramos García, Attorney for Urban Development of the State of Jalisco, emphasized the need to build a bridge between classrooms and land-use planning.
He warned that Jalisco faces major urban challenges that require the support and guidance of committed educational institutions: “We need sustainable and resilient cities; efficient mobility for all; decent, accessible, and well-located housing; more public spaces and nature; inclusive and humane cities. If we bridge distances, bring people closer, connect neighborhoods and opportunities, and improve community life.”
Alexander Zatyrka, SJ, rector of ITESO, celebrated this alliance, recalling the historical ties between the two institutions, which date back to the founding of Prodeur in 1994 by architect Gabriel Casillas Moreno, an ITESO graduate. He explained that these ties have been strengthened over the years through academic and social cooperation via Professional Application Projects (PAP), in which the Attorney General's Office has advised community initiatives.
The Rector said that the agreement takes on a new dimension in light of the current challenges facing our cities, which are experiencing “economic and population phenomena that drive incessant and excessive metropolitan growth, especially towards the peripheries, which puts pressure on land use and makes resources and services available to its inhabitants insufficient.”
Under this premise, he concluded that the agreement will open doors to training and advocacy projects from the Department of Habitat and Urban Development and its academic offerings, both at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and research programs.
